4C Facebook Target Segment Redesign

UX/UI Design

Project Overview

Project Info: Redesigned the user flow of Target Segment creation on 4C's Facebook Dashboard.

Company: For 4C Insights (full time)

Timeline: March 2017

Challenge: How to make creating and editing user target segments more intuitive and user friendly?

New Feature: We are adding target segment suggestions based on initial input.

The Analysis

Analysis:

  • The old user flow requires users to open two modals and is rather "clicky."
  • Users are not able to search within all categories; they have to know the categories first before searching the sub-categories, which requires a lot of thinking on the users' behalf.
  • Within the same target segment, the sub-categories have an "or" relationship. Between two target segments, there is an "and" relationship. However, this might not be apparent to the users as there was no indications anywhere.
  • Users would not be able to see the content of all the sub-categories unless they open the second modal. For instance, if there are 3 interests, we are only displaying it as Interests (3) because of spacing issue. Users would have to click into the edit icon to view all the interests on the second modal.  This has made requiring crucial information difficult for users.

Improvements:

  • Eliminated the second modal by combing creating and editing target segments into one flow.
  • Simply added another category, "All Categories" into the same category+search paradigm to enable search within all categories (keeping the same category+search paradigm requires less development work).
  • Added more user-friendly terminologies, such as "Narrow," "Exclude," together with help texts and tooltips, to help users understand the relationships between different target segments and guide them through the inherently complicated workflow.
  • Worked with limited spacing and came up the solution of how to surface more than 100 suggestions based on initial inputs.
